Speech Contest And News Anchor

1. OBJECTIVES

The objectives of this activity are:

  1. To improve students’ speaking and public speaking skills
  2. To establish networking between participants both domestically and abroad
  3. To motivate participants in developing critical thinking

 

2. COMPETITIONS AND DESCRIPTIONS

2 types of competitions:

  1. Speech Contest (participants deliver speeches in English that are watched by the audience and judges).
  2. News Anchor (participants inform the news in English that are watched by the audiences and judges).

 

3. RULES OF THE COMPETITIONS

A. SPEECH CONTEST

Before the competition

  1. Participants are active university students;
  2. Each university can only send a maximum of 3 participants;
  3. Participants must complete administration (registration & payment) no later than one week before the technical meeting (2 December 2020)
  4. Global Topic is. Sub-topics that are the theme of the speech can be downloaded on the website Widyatama International Academic Competition (WI-CAN): Discussion of topics carried out in English, and does not contain Ethnicity, Religion, Race, and Inter- group relation and / or pornographic elements;
  5. Participants are given 7 minutes to give a speech in accordance with the sub-topics chosen. Excess time results in an automatic value reduction by a panel of
  6. Participants are allowed to use assistive devices to make speeches, except hazardous materials (explosive materials including fireworks, sharp weapons, ).
  7. Participants must take lottery numbers and lottery sub-topics at the technical meeting and submit them to the Speech Contest
  8. The committee does not provide any equipment except loudspeakers. Sound effects, visual effects and others are the responsibility of the

 

During the competition

  1. Participants are required to wear neat and polite
  2. Participants must attend at least 30 minutes before re-registration is closed. If not, the participant is declared
  3. Participants are not allowed to do any exercises while in the competition room or outside the competition room during the
  4. LO will guide participants to the stage when the participant’s name is called by the
  5. Participants are stated to have started the speech at the time the timer
  6. Participants are not allowed to ask for a repetition of the timer from the start unless there are technical problems or other force majeure

B. NEWS ANCHOR

The English News Anchor Contest is an event that tests students’ ability to present news in English correctly, with clear voice articulation, and expressions that match the news content.

Race Mechanism

  1. Each university sends 1 participant.
  2. The quota of participants is 15 people from universities in Indonesia and abroad who are invited.
  3. News manuscripts consist of 1 topic that must be chosen by participants (below).
  4. Each participant is required to make 1 video based on the chosen topic, with a maximum duration of 3-5 minutes.
  5. Videos are sent to the committee at the latest on December 10, 2020 at 16.00 WIB.
  6. The video will be shown on the D-day on December 12, 2020 and participants must be present on that date via the zoom application.
  7. Participants who do not meet the conditions above are considered void.

Assessment criteria:

  • Fluency (20%)
  • Intonation (20%)
  • Clarity (20%)
  • Pronunciation (20%)
  • Gestures and expressions (20%)
